What Are SDC Learnerships?

The Skills Development Corporation (SDC) partners with South African businesses to create B-BBEE-accredited learnerships that serve two goals:

  1. Empower unemployed youth with in-demand, practical skills
  2. Help businesses meet their B-BBEE compliance in Skills Development

Learnerships are available for both:

  • Abled applicants
  • Learners with disabilities (with full support & accommodations)

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Be unemployed or underemployed
  • Be 18–35 years old
  • Have Grade 12 or school-leaving certificate (tertiary qualifications optional)
  • Have no criminal record
  • If applicable, provide proof of disability (as per Employment Equity Act)

Required Documents

Before attending document submission day, prepare:

  • Updated CV
  • 2 x certified copies of your highest qualification
  • 2 x certified copies of your SA ID
  • Proof of residence
  • 3-month bank statement (not older than 3 months)
  • SARS Tax Number (notice of registration)
  • Proof of disability (if applicable)

Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Online Submission

Register online via the SDC Student Hub to join the applicant pool:

  • Submit for Abled learners or Disabled learners, depending on your status
  • Choose your preferred campus: Johannesburg or Cape Town

Step 2: Submit Original Documents

Attend your local SDC campus and hand in all required original documents in person.

Step 3: Document Validation

Your documents are thoroughly checked for authenticity and compliance.

Step 4: Interview

  • Communication ability
  • Learning potential

Step 5: Assessment Test

You’ll complete an assessment and must score at least 80% to proceed.

Step 6: Final Validation

If you pass all checks, your name goes into the Validated Learner Database. You’ll wait here until you’re matched to an appropriate learnership.

Step 7: Learnership Placement

Once matched, you’ll sign your contract at SDC and begin your training!
