ISASA Teaching Learnerships & Internships 2026
The Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa (ISASA) facilitates various teacher training pathways. For 2026, these are categorized into the centralized SAMSTIP programme and individual school-based internships.
1. SAMSTIP (South African Mathematics and Science Teacher Intern Programme)
SAMSTIP is a partnership between ISASA, Investec, and the Department of Basic Education. It targets prospective teachers in Mathematics and Science.
- Status for 2026: According to recent ISASA updates, the central SAMSTIP programme is not currently accepting new interns for the immediate cycle. However, it is highly recommended to monitor the ISASA website for mid-year updates, as recruitment cycles often open for the following academic year (2027) later in 2026.
- What it Covers (When Open):
- UNISA tuition fees and textbooks.
- Monthly stipend for transport and accommodation.
- School-based mentorship at an ISASA member school.
- Obligation: Graduates must teach at a public school for a period equal to the duration of the bursary received.
2. Individual School Internships (2026 Intake)
Many ISASA member schools run their own independent internship programmes (often called “Learnerships”). These are currently being advertised for the 2026 academic year.

General Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for these school-based learnerships, you typically need:
- Enrolment: You must be currently enrolled in a B.Ed or PGCE through a recognized distance learning institution (like UNISA or North-West University).
- Citizenship: Valid South African ID/Citizenship.
- Clearance: Valid Police Clearance and/or Sexual Offences Register clearance.
- Academic Record: A strong matric certificate or current university transcript.
- Extramurals: Willingness to assist in the school’s sporting or cultural programmes.
3. How to Apply
Applications for these learnerships are not sent to ISASA directly. You must apply to the specific school advertising the position.

4. Financial Assistance: Staff Development Fund (SDF)
For those already employed by ISASA schools or looking for institutional support, the SDF Application Form 2026 is available for download on the ISASA portal. This fund is used by schools to help train and develop their staff members into qualified educators.
