MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB

The curriculum is outcomes-based and follows a student-centred approach. It is a one-year programme, which consists of theoretical and clinical components

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS

Equip graduates to provide emergency medical care within the Emergency Care Assistant scope of practice within a wide range of emergency medical service environment settings.

Graduates can register with the HPCSA as an Emergency Care Assistant.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

Admission Requirements
1. The applicant with a Senior Certificate (Before 2008) must have at least a minimum of an E symbol on Higher Grade or a D symbol on Standard Grade pass for all of the following subjects:
• English (min HG symbol D or SG symbol C)
• Mathematics (min HG symbol E or SG symbol D)
• Biology and/or Physical Sciences (min HG symbol E or SG symbol D)

OR
2. The applicant with a National Senior Certificate with a Higher Certificate Endorsement must have the following subjects and rating codes:
• English (4)
• Mathematics (3) or Mathematical Literacy (6)
• Life Sciences (3) and/or Physical Science (3)
• The applicant must have a minimum of 19 points (22 points if Mathematical Literacy applies), which excludes Life Orientation
OR
3. National Certificate (Vocational), must have achieved the minimum codes, as indicated for the following subjects:
• English (5)
• Mathematics (4) or Mathematics Literacy (7)
• Life Sciences and/or Physical Sciences (4)
The candidates must have a minimum of 24 points (27 points if Mathematical Literacy applies), which excludes Life Orientation

REQUIRED JOB SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

All applicants will be considered, with the understanding that preference will be given in accordance with the Employment Equity Plan of Mediclinic Southern Africa, as well as internal applicants/employees that meet the minimum requirements.

  • A minimum of 40 hours of voluntary duties in Emergency Medical Services is recommended.
    Applicants must pass the medical and physical fitness evaluations to be considered for the course (medical and fitness evaluation guidelines will be available on the Mediclinic website).
  • Eligible candidates will be invited to participate in an interview, medical and fitness assessments as part of the selection process.
  • Applicants, who do not meet the minimum entry requirements but have healthcare-related experience, can apply for access to the Higher Certificate programme via RPL.

The RPL applicant has to meet the following minimum requirements:
• Have a valid Matric (grade 12) with admission to a higher certificate or equivalent with an APS score as indicated above or an old senior certificate with an aggregate of 950 marks or higher with the compulsory subjects
• Be 25 years and older
• Be a registered Basic Ambulance Assistant (BAA) OR Ambulance Emergency Assistant (AEA) with the HPCSA
• Have a minimum of 5 years of operational experience
• Be currently employed by an Emergency Medical Service Write and pass the theory and clinical assessments

Rules and Requirements
• Students must have an average mark of 50% for each subject to gain entrance to the final examination.
• Competency must be achieved in all formative and summative practical, fitness, and clinical assessments.
• A final mark of 50% per module/subject is required to pass each year.
• Students will need to fulfil all requirements to complete each study year and obtain the final qualification.
• A supplementary theoretical and clinical examination will be granted (provided the student meets the criteria).
• Students may maintain credit for certain theoretical modules should they fail a year. It is important to note that the Emergency Medical Care modules are co-requisites for progression to the next year of study and therefore should the student fail one of these modules they will be required to repeat all three. In the case where a student fails a non-clinical module, the student will be required to maintain clinical proficiency through the completion of clinical practice shifts each month.
• Mediclinic (Pty) Ltd will place students for the clinical component of the programme.
• Students may not work permanent night duty during the programme.
• Twelve (12) days of sick leave will be granted per year (upon receipt of a valid medical certificate).
• Leave will be granted according to the academic programme.
