SAPS Entry Level Police Training Programme for 2025/2026

As South Africa continues to strengthen its national safety infrastructure, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has officially launched its 2025/2026 recruitment drive for entry-level Police Trainees. This initiative aims to bolster law enforcement across the country with 5 500 new recruits set to enrol in the Basic Police Development Learning Programme (BPDLP)—a comprehensive 21-month training designed to forge disciplined, community-focused officers.

What You Need to Know:

  • Positions Available: 5 500 entry‑level trainee posts nationwide
  • Training Duration: 21 months of institutional and community-based training.
  • Stipend and Remuneration: Trainees earn a monthly stipend (around R4,500 during training), with the potential to move into a full Constable salary—roughly R238 629 annually—upon successful completion.

NOTE: Applicants in possession of a three (3) year National Diploma / Degree recorded on the National Learner Record Database (NLRD) on at least a NQF 6 or higher level in Law / Policing / Criminology / Law Enforcement / Forensic Investigation / IT, will be considered for placement in the following units: Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI)/ Detective and Forensic Service / Crime Intelligence (Cl).

Who’s Eligible?

To stand a chance, interested candidates must meet the following criteria:

  1. Citizenship & Age: South African citizen or permanent resident, aged between 18–35.
  2. Education: Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent qualification required.
  3. Language: Proficiency in English and at least one other official language.
  4. Fitness & Health: Physically and mentally fit, passing medical, psychological, and fitness assessments, including BMI limits and waist measurements.
  5. Character & Conduct: No criminal record, no pending cases, clean background regarding sexual offences or child protection registers. Integrity and vetting screenings mandatory.
  6. Tattoos: No tattoos visible when in uniform.
  7. Driver’s Licence: A Code B driving licence is advantageous but not compulsory.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Note that preference will be given to applicants with a valid drivers licence for at least a light motor vehicle including the following qualifications:

  • Applicants in possession of a relevant three (3) years tertiary qualification (NQF 6 or higher) i.e. Criminal Law / Policing / Forensic investigation etc.
  • Applicants in possession of other three (3) years tertiary qualification (NQF 6 or higher
  • Applicants in possession of Grade 12 school certificate with the minimum requirements for admission to Bachelor’s Degree
  • Applicants in possession of Grade 12 school certificate with the minimum requirements for admission to Diploma; and
  • Applicants in possession of Grade 12 school certificate with the minimum requirements for admission to Higher Certificate study.

PERIOD OF TRAINING:

Successful candidates will undergo such training as, where and when determined by the National Commissioner, at any SAPS Training Academy in South Africa.

During the Basic Training Phase, the SAPS shall provide free training gear, meals and accommodation to the police trainee.

Trainees will receive medical aid benefits for the duration of the 21-month Basic Police Development Learning Program.

Upon successful completion of the Basic Training, the trainees will be considered for permanent appointment as members of the SAPS on the rank of Constable.

CORE FUNCTIONS:

Successful candidates will serve as functional police officials. As such, they will be deployed to carry out the following functions:

  • Prevent, combat and investigate crime,
  • Maintain public order,
  • Protect and secure the inhabitants of the Republic and their property,
  • Uphold and enforce the law.

Training Breakdown:

The BPDLP is divided into three phases, combining classroom studies, police science, community policing, and physical readiness programs, culminating in firearms handling and crime investigation training. Recruits receive uniforms, meals, accommodation, medical aid, and a monthly stipend.
