Traffic Trainee Programme 2026 – Application Online

Traffic Trainee Programme 2026: Comprehensive Guide

The Traffic Trainee Programme (Learnership) is a highly competitive entry-level opportunity for South African youth to become qualified Traffic Officers.

1. Essential Requirements (The “Big 5”)

To be considered for the 2026 intake, you must meet these non-negotiable criteria:

  • Education: Grade 12 (Matric) or NCV Level 4. No specific subjects are required, but English literacy is essential.
  • Driver’s License: A valid Code B (Manual) license. Learners’ licenses and automatic-only licenses are generally not accepted.
  • Age Limit: Applicants must be between 18 and 35 years old.
  • Criminal Record: You must have a clean criminal record. Even minor pending cases or old convictions (like a DUI) will result in immediate disqualification.
  • Fitness: A medical certificate is required to prove you are fit for strenuous physical exercise.

2. How to Apply

Applications are not handled by the traffic colleges but by the Provincial Departments of Transport or Municipalities.

  1. Obtain the Z83 Form: Use the New Z83 Form (effective from January 2021). Using the old form will lead to your application being discarded.
  2. Locate Adverts: Check the DPSA Vacancy Circular (published every Friday), provincial government websites, and local newspapers.
  3. Required Documents:
    • Completed and signed Z83 form.
    • Comprehensive CV with at least three references.
    • Certified copies of your ID, Matric Certificate, and Driver’s License (certification should be less than 6 months old).
  4. Submission: Most departments require hand-delivery to regional offices or delivery via registered post. Online applications are currently rare but are used by some metros like the City of Cape Town.

3. Selection & Physical Assessment

Shortlisted candidates must pass a “Battery Test” which usually includes:

  • 2.4km Run: To be completed in roughly 12–14 minutes.
  • Push-ups & Sit-ups: Maximum reps in 1 minute.
  • Beep Test: A shuttle run that tests cardiovascular endurance.
  • Firearm & Driving Test: Evaluation of your ability to handle a vehicle and basic competency for firearm training.

4. Training Overview

Successful candidates are sent to one of the 14 accredited Traffic Training Colleges (e.g., Gene Louw in Western Cape, Boekenhoutkloof in Gauteng).

  • Duration: Typically 12 months for the Basic Traffic Officer’s Diploma.
  • Stipend: Trainees usually receive a monthly stipend (ranging from R3,000 to R5,000 depending on the province) to cover basic expenses during training.

5. ⚠️ SCAM ALERT: How to Protect Yourself

  • No Upfront Payment: The government never asks for money to “reserve a spot,” for “medical fees,” or for “uniforms” during the application phase.
  • Official Channels Only: Legitimate adverts will always have a specific Reference Number and will be published on official government websites (.gov.za) or reputable newspapers.
  • Verification: If you see an ad on Facebook or WhatsApp offering a high stipend (e.g., R8,000+) with no closing date, it is likely a scam. Verify with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) at 012 999 5200.
