Applications For Traffic Officer Trainee Programme

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government is inviting applications for the position of Trainee Provincial Traffic Inspector. This two-year internship programme offers candidates the opportunity to complete the Traffic Officer’s Diploma at the Traffic Training College in Pietermaritzburg while earning a commencing salary of R193 359 per annum.

Once the diploma is successfully completed, candidates must be prepared to take up placements at any Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) station across KwaZulu-Natal.

As a Trainee Traffic Inspector, candidates will be trained to:

– Enforce road traffic, passenger, and transport legislation through approved traffic law enforcement activities.
– Manage traffic flow, perform point duty, and control traffic in congested areas.
– Coordinate and safeguard accident scenes, identify hazardous locations, and support management with safety recommendations.
– Participate in speed testing operations, traffic policing projects, and road safety campaigns.
– Issue fines and execute arrests in line with legal requirements, directives, and procedures.
– Escort abnormal vehicles and loads, manage overload control for goods and passengers, and conduct road safety checks.
– Test driver’s licences, conduct vehicle roadworthiness inspections, and monitor compliance at Driver Licence Testing Centres (DLTC) and Vehicle Testing Stations (VTS).
– Provide visible traffic policing and promote crime prevention through patrols, roadblocks, and motorist assistance.
– Perform administrative duties, comply with operational plans, firearm regulations, and participate in staff development programmes.

– Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent qualification (NQF Level 4)
– Valid Code B driver’s licence (manual transmission)
– No criminal record (SAPS clearance screening required)
– Medical certificate (not older than 3 months) confirming physical fitness for strenuous exercise
– Successful candidates will undergo a full medical examination at state expense
– South African citizen or permanent resident
– Must be under the age of 35 on the first day of enrolment
– Must be deemed a “fit and proper” person to serve as a Traffic Officer
