The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed that social grant payments for September 2025 will begin this week, starting with older persons, followed by disability and children’s grants.
From 1 September, all new grant applications will require biometric data to be submitted through an electronic Know Your Client (eKYC) system to enhance security and accountability.
This new initiative is aimed at improving risk controls and ensuring that social grant recipients are living individuals at the time of their application.
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced that social grant payments for September 2025 will begin this week, urging beneficiaries to take note of the scheduled dates.
The agency, which administers over 19 million grant payments, confirmed the following schedule:
- Older Persons Grant: Tuesday, 2 September 2025
- Disability Grant: Wednesday, 3 September 2025
- Children’s Grants: Thursday, 4 September 2025
In addition, SASSA has introduced a new system for all new grant applications submitted from 1 September 2025.
These applications will now require biometric data captured through an electronic Know Your Client (eKYC) system.
Applications submitted without this biometric enrolment will be placed under review, and applicants will be notified to provide their biometrics to complete the process.
According to SASSA, this new initiative will enhance risk controls, creating a more secure and accountable grant system by verifying that applicants are living individuals at the time of their application.
