The South African Army has officially opened applications for the Military Skills Development System (MSDS) 2027 Intake. This is a prestigious two-year voluntary program where successful candidates receive basic military training in the first year and are deployed or undergo specialized functional training in the second year.

Below is a detailed guide on the requirements, application process, and key dates for the 2027 intake.

Important Dates

  • Application Opening Date: 16 February 2026

  • Closing Date: 27 March 2026

  • Unsuccessful Notification: If you are not contacted by 31 December 2027, consider your application unsuccessful.

General Requirements

To be eligible for the SA Army MSDS, you must:

  • Be a South African Citizen (No dual citizenship).

  • Age Limits:

    • 18 – 22 years (Grade 12 applicants).

    • 18 – 26 years (Applicants with a 3-year Tertiary Qualification/Degree or N6).

  • Be medically fit and physically healthy.

  • Have no criminal record or pending cases.

  • Tattoos: No visible tattoos (on the face, neck, lower arms, or legs).

  • Height & Weight:

    • Males: Min height 1.55m / Min weight 52kg.

    • Females: Min height 1.48m / Min weight 48kg.

    • BMI: Between 18.5 and 30.

Academic Requirements

  • Grade 12 Certificate: Minimum Admission Point Score (APS) of 18, excluding Life Orientation.

  • Specialized Roles: Many technical careers (Engineering, Intelligence, Technical Services) require Level 3 or 4 in Mathematics and Physical Science.

How to Apply

The SANDF does not have an online application system. You must submit a physical application form.

  1. Obtain the Form: Forms are free and available at regional recruitment centers, Army Support Bases, or downloadable from the Department of Defence website.

  2. Required Documents: You must attach certified copies (not older than 3 months) of:

    • Your ID Document.

    • Matric Certificate (or Statement of Results for 2025 matriculants).

    • Tertiary Qualifications (if applicable).

    • A comprehensive CV.

    • Proof of Residence or a letter from a Village Chief/Councilor.

  3. Submission:

    • By Post: Send to SA Army HQ, Chief Directorate Army Corporate Services, Directorate Army Human Resources, Recruitment Section, Private Bag X981, Pretoria, 0001.

    • Hand Delivery: To your nearest Army Recruitment Centre or Army Support Base.

Selection Process

Candidates who meet the initial paper screening will be invited for:

  • Psychometric Evaluation.

  • Physical Fitness Test (Running, push-ups, sit-ups).

  • Medical Evaluation.

  • Criminal Record Vetting.

Note: Application forms are NOT FOR SALE. Do not pay anyone who promises you a spot in the military.
