Programme Outcome
This programme leads to registration in the category General Nurse (GN R.171 of 8 March 2013). The Registered General Nurse with the qualification Diploma in Nursing will have the necessary knowledge and skills to render nursing care to patients with a wide range of conditions in a variety of healthcare settings and manage a nursing unit.
Application Process
The following will be required as soon as the application system opens: required:
- Short CV
- Certified copy of grade 12 certificate or grade 11 academic results
- Certified copy of the front page of the ID book
- Proof of non-refundable application fee paid
- Proof of South African citizenship, if applicable.
Rules and Requirements
- Students must have an average mark of 50% for each module to gain entrance to the examination.
- A theory examination mark of 50% per module is required to pass the examination.
- A theory final mark of 50% per module is required to pass each year.
- Competency must be achieved in all formative and summative clinical assessments.
- Students will need to fulfil all requirements to complete each study year and obtain the final qualification.
- A supplementary theoretical and clinical examination will be granted.
- Students may maintain credit for the theoretical/practical portions of the programme passed if they have to repeat the year.
- Mediclinic will place students for the clinical component of the programme.
- All students must work a 42 hour week minimum to qualify.
- Students may not work permanent night duty during the programme.
- Twenty-eight shifts (of 6 hours) leave (per year) will be granted during the programme (according to the rotation schedule).
- Twelve (12) days of sick leave will be granted per year.
- If all the practical requirements cannot be met in the student’s work setting, he or she will be placed in another facility by the Facilitator, in collaboration with the Nursing Manager.
- Clinical accompaniment is provided by the educator/facilitator, trained mentors, and registered professional nurses.
The student must provide:
- Evidence of clinical competence
- A complete portfolio of evidence
